This “Momthing” can be hard whether you are in the middle of the messy baby and toddler years or dealing with the thorny teen issues. We all need a little inspiration and encouragement along the way.  That is why I love the new book, Grit & Grace: Devotions for Warrior Moms.

The authors Suzanne and Greta share their heart with you in each devotion, retelling their own trials in funny and loving ways to show you that they too battle through motherhood with scriptures in hand, prayer, and grace. The devotions blend tales of hilarious situations with joy-filled times that we all can relate too. From memories of their worst mom days to gentler times of joy, you will identify with each short devotion.

Reading them brought back my own memories of walking through being a mother of a little toddler. I really related to the devotion involving “poo,”  “a broken computer,” and “injuries.”  With each devotion, the authors include relevant scriptures the encourage and uplift you as a mom.

My favorite quote:

Being a mom is a high calling and a challenge. Whether you’re a working mama or you stay home with your kids, you don’t have it easy. Listen to this encouragement for mamas found in a well-worn passage of Scripture:

“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her. Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all” (Proverbs 31:25-29). (Page 257).

The authors are also careful to remind you to remember that being a mom is just for a season that flies by. I love this passage written by Greta where she rewrites Ecclesiastes 3:1 from a mother’s perspective:

“A time to breastfeed and a time to feed yourself,

a time to be diapered and a time to use the toilet,

a time to crawl and a time to run,

a time to babble and a time to speak full, cohesive sentences,

a time to scribble and a time to write down your own stories,

a time to be rocked and a time to put yourself to bed,

a time for car seats and a time for sitting in the front seat.”(Page 266).

With funny stories and poignant ones, Greta and Suzanne paint motherhood and all its wonders. This a book not to miss.

About the authors:

Suzanne Hadley Gosselin and Gretta Kennedy first met as roommates at Multnomah University. They are quick to admit they did not like each other when they first met due to opposite personalities. However, they worked out their differences and became best friends who roomed together for all four years of college. Two decades later, during a phone conversation, they realized God was laying on their hearts the desire to write a devotional for moms of young children to encourage and strengthen them in their role as mothers. It was then the idea for Grit & Grace: Devotions for Warrior Moms was born.

Suzanne Hadley Gosselin is a regular writer and editor for Focus on the Family and David C Cook and previously served as an editor for Clubhouse and Clubhouse Jr. Gosselin has written books for Zondervan, Harvest House and Tyndale and is the author of Expectant Parents: Preparing Together for the Journey of Parenthood.

Gosselin lives in Bakersfield, CA with her husband, Kevin, and four children. The family enjoys escaping to the ocean.
