| Making my own cozy, reading memories with my daughter |
Warm, cozy books to snuggle up to are a must if you want your children to read. As a child, I remember my cozy reading corner complete with fuzzy pillows and throw piled into a corner of my bed with a stack of beautiful, illustrated picture books readily available. These books were both bought or checked out from our library. My mom would join me with a cup of coffee, bringing a cup hot chocolate complete with marshmellows for me. We would snuggle into our reading nook and escape into worlds of fantasy together.
We never retired that reading nook eiher. As I grew older, the reading material changed from picture books to glossy magazines and hardbacks novels filled with inspirational stories by authors like Madeleine Ingle’s Wrinkle in Time or my all time favorite, Ring of Endless Light. My mom filled my reading nook with beautiful National Geographics as well as my favorite teen magazines like Seventeen.
My daughter is only 10 now so my versions of a cozy reading nook include chapter books like Magic Tree House, picture books, nonfiction books, and magazines. She is going to kill me when she sees the mess I made of her bed. We also need to straighten out her book shelf. My point though is to keep our children reading we need to make their personal libraries resource rich. 🙂
Another important ingredient that should not be under valued is reading together and also encouraging your child to share her/his excitement with you over facts she/he just learned or fantastic story plots that keep her/him glued to the pages.

I tried making a cozy little reading spot for my 4-year-old, with a bean bag chair in a quiet corner, but her favorite spot for reading is on my bed!

I think a place to read is so important for children and their bed is the ideal place. If parents were less worried about the colour of the carpet and curtains and more concerned with the reading friendliness of their child’s bedrooms then teaching would be so much easier! Once my daughter was out of her cot what I wanted most for her was a bedside table for her books and a lamp! The good books are essential too of course!

My Son has a favorite recliner that he enjoys reading books in. =) I think having books that your child really enjoys are ways to encourage their love of reading!
