Christina Hubbard : Poetic Worshiper of Christ

October 15, 2016 By Mary Hill 7 Comments

The writings of Christina Hubbard  paint my screen in hues of lovely blues, reds, pinks, and glorious Royal purples. Her love for our Christ rises up in every one of her written words that echos in my mind.

I have only recently discovered Christina Hubbard and her poetic blogging. I learned about her through the Five Minute Friday community.

When you visit her site, you find truths told in poetry, freeing and deep truths that reintroduce you to the love of Christ which seeps deep into your soul.

Today, Christina invites you to write about “aware” as part of the 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes. I hope that as you become more aware of Christina, you will find resources and devotions that will help you walk even closer with Christ.

christina-hubbardChristina Hubbard: Biography Information

Hi, I’m Christina! I’m a poet who writes memoir. I write at Creative + Free about identity and courageous, creative living. This month I’m hosting 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes through the Five Minute Friday community. I also lead a writing group through Compel Training. When I’m not writing, I’m a mom to two squirrelly, creative kids, Abby and Kyle, who will change the world, and I’ve been married to my husband Bobby (a patient, adventurous man) for 15 years. I love doing yoga outside, roadtripping, and long leisurely dinners with friends. Encouraging other creatives gives me a big thrill, so this is so much fun to hang out on your blog, Mary, and spend time with your fabulous readers.

Christina Hubbard: Gospel Story, How She Came to Know Christ as Her Savior.

When I was seven, I chose to follow Jesus. Since then, I’ve had a few spiritually transforming moments which solidified my faith. Most recently, it was when I went to South Korea for a couple of weeks to visit a friend. Unfortunately, I got really sick and ended up spending a lot of time doing nothing. That was so good because I needed to stop running on empty. During that forced break, I really felt God’s loving presence in a deep, all-encompassing way. He showed me I didn’t have to prove my worth to him or anyone else. He loves me for me. I had been lost in grief, loneliness, and a hard season of motherhood. The experience changed me forever. So many pivotal changes, like making the choice to dive headfirst into writing, happened in my life because of that trip.

Her Favorite Verse and How It Became Important to Her

My favorite verse is Psalm 55:17. In the Message it reads,

“I call to God;
    God will help me.
At dusk, dawn, and noon I sigh
    deep sighs—he hears, he rescues.”

I memorized it as a kid. It’s such a profound idea that our God hears us no matter where we are and what we are doing. No matter what I’m going through, this truth has carried me: God is with me. He hears. He answers.

Her Blogging Story

I started blogging many years ago to practice writing and get my ideas out there into the world. A little over a year ago, I launched a new blog and went all in for the writing life. God definitely called me to write because it’s what lights my fire, but I’m still learning what that entails. Truthfully, I haven’t always loved blogging because I’m an overachiever at heart, but there’s no hard, fast rules to being a successful blogger. The medium has freed me to try new things and let go of self-pressure and to simply be me.

Her Blogging Mission

My mission is to help other creatives be a force for good. I want to inspire people who struggle with identity or worth to realize the innate courage and creativity God has already given them. Honest, hope-filled stories cultivate spiritual depth and bring real life change.

What Inspires Her to Write for Christ?

First, people. Hearing people’s stories inspires me to share my own. Stories shatter walls and help us to see the individual just as Christ does. Second, landscapes. Getting to places where I can sit on the beach or see a new natural wonder is a high priority in my writing life. In those places, I experience God’s greatness and realize I am simply a tool in his hand. That makes me want to write forever.

Her Favorite Song

Can I have two? I came across this beautiful video the other day. It’s a great picture of what we’re called to as creatives: to lose ourselves in the story and put it all out there. We’re inviting our readers and friends to dance with us. The song is Lose It by Oh Wonder. My second fave is a U2 song which has repeated on my playlist for over a year. It’s an intimate echo of God reaching down to us when we are struggling to hope: Song for Someone.

Authors Who Inspire Her or Motivate Her to Write

Ed Cyzewski is a great writer for spiritual writers and contemplative types. He has so many accessible, insightful ebooks  on faith and words like Pray, Write, Grow.  Austin Kleon is another favorite of mine. His books like Steal Like an Artist are square packages of amazing inspiration for any creative.

A Personal Blogging Story

When I first started writing, I did a guest post for a friend on fear. A guy at church told me it really touched him, and he broke down in tears right there as he was telling me. I couldn’t believe my story could touch someone like that. It was a moment God showed me he could use my words to help others grow in ways I might never know.

Her Blogging Tips

  • Write what YOU love and work at it.
  • Invest in your creativity, whether that’s going outside more, taking a dance class, or reading good books.
  • Share from your place of struggle and you will connect with your readers deeply. It’s not easy to stay there, but when we show up to the page with a vulnerable, open heart, God meets us there and changes us in the process.

Last Minute Thoughts On Inspiration and Uplifting

This is simple theology, but it never fails to revolutionize my day: God loves you. ALL of you. Not just the pretty parts, but the broken ones too. He’s got the day covered before it even begins, and he is constantly recreating us into beautiful creations. Keep moving toward him even when it doesn’t make sense, even when you don’t know if He’s there anymore. He’s in the business of making all things new through his redemptive love.

Christina is such an inspiration! Her happy smile, her love for God and people and her desire to encourage others are such a blessing. The word prompts for #5MFW have been fun even though sometimes challenging to fit in with me theme. Christina has done a great job leading us!

I love the medium of poetry — I guess I should call it a genre, but doesn’t poetry use words like a paintbrush to create beauty?

Thanks for sharing your heart and your mission here!

Hi, Michelle, poetry certainly does that (and the world needs more of it, wouldn’t you agree?) Thanks for reading!
