Calling Out to Him in The Winter Night
Night surrounds me as the cold closes in.
Alone in the dark, I fail and flay.
I can’t find solace in my Lord.
I feel lost and afraid.
But
He is there! He hears you. He never forsakes those He loves.
I sat alone in my bed fighting night terrors and visions one night long ago. I could not find reprieve from my worries. Do you find this situation happening too? What do you do to battle the demons of the night?
My mom long ago told me to take out my Bible and read Psalms, especially the ones of encouragement. After reading the verses, she also instructed me to place the Bible under my pillow so that I would find comfort. I did this for years. On my worst nights to this day, I often sleep with my Bible under my pillow or next to me.
I love these verses especially. I meditate on them to help me during the night.
Psalm 139:17
How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them!
Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand—
when I awake, I am still with you.
Psalm 91:11
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways…
Psalm 30:5
For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime;
weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.
Proverbs 3:24
When you lie down, you will not be afraid, when you lie down,
your sleep will be sweet.
John 14:27
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you.
I do not give to you as the world gives.
Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
2 Timothy 1:7
For God’s not given me a spirit of fear,
But a spirit of love,
and of power, and a sound mind,
To live each day and glorify his name.
What verses do you use to boost your faith in the cold, dark night?
