Despite a massive civil war in which more than 70,000 Syrian civilians have died, some Syrian rebels took time out from the war to send a special message of support to Boston. The humanitarian disaster of the Civil War has not abated, and now there are allegations that the Syrian regime used chemical weapons against their own people.
Upon hearing this news, several Republican leaders called for immediate action against the Syrian regime, but not all Republicans are in agreement. New York Republican Rep. Peter King urges caution in supporting the rebels because he feels many of the rebels have been influenced by Al Qaeda.
What do you think the best role for the United States in this war would be? I am siding with the caution that President Obama and King are displaying. We can rush in and help, but we could repeat history. We helped Afghanistan rebels in the 1980s fight against Communism rule. In the aftermath, the Taliban were able to take control. The Taliban granted safe haven to al-Qaida and Bin Laden who were responsible for attacks of 9/11.
We have to tread carefully in this region. We could support a faction that hates us and help them gain power in Syria, setting up another repressive government and breeding ground for more hate-filled terrorists groups.
What is the best approach to Syria and the ongoing war there? I wish I knew how to stop the bloodshed. It is so sad to watch and hear of the humanitarian disaster in this country. Sometimes, we have to accept that our hands our tied. We can only pray for solutions and leadership to emerge that will lead to a better future for Syria.
