Purple Royalty Covers My Sins

Meandering through the country, I come upon a field of purple, lilac-colored flowers. I stop, camera in hand, I climb through weeds and thorns to capture my pictures.

The purple reminds me of my teen years when my mom decided to paint my room lilac purple. The walls glistened with the color. My reaction, “yuk.’  Since then, I have always had a love, hate relationship with the color purple.  The hue has to be a certain shade and certain intensity for me to love purple.

The flowers shine my preferred hue of light purple. They make the field look royal.

Often associated with royalty, purple symbolizes penance, patience, faith, and trust in Bible.  The deep color also equates with riches.

Numbers 4:13 – And they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon.

These lilac beauties catch and hold my attention. I can’t sit on the grown because of my bad knees, but this time I make my way to the ground just to sit among their grace and beauty. They smell earthy and look like wisps of purple royal silks.

Purple colors the ancient Jewish temple, its curtains and carpets.  It plays a special role in the burnt offerings for sins. The ashes are removed and a purple cloth is lain on the altar.

I think on this now as I gaze at the beauty of these flowers, their holy clothing silken purple. My sins gone and a royal cloth covers where the burnt ashes once stained the altar. A beautiful picture of God’s mercy.
