Write 31 Days: Memories of A Mother Never Afraid; Full of Faith

October 2, 2018 By Mary Hill 3 Comments

Joshua 1:9

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage;

be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed:

for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest

(even an operation room.)

Yesterday, I shared my love of my mother and how her story influenced mine. I spoke so briefly on this. I mean five minutes seem to fly. I think back to the times my mom showed her fear. She showed “afraid.”

She struggled with a husband who suffered from mental illness. A mother of four, working demanding jobs; I don’t remember her fear. I remember her resilience and love. How did she cope?

Today, she has surgery (September 5, 2018): A BRAIN OPERATION.

Now, I am afraid.

Afraid she will not come out the other end. Afraid after 72 plus years, she will move on into a heavenly realm.

I write this raw from the heart.

Her story so impacted mine. She lives her life with a gusty attitude. I don’t even compare to her.

I feel like a privileged, spoiled woman when I dare compare my life to hers.

What I have learned from her about being afraid is complex.

We start in our prayer closet on our knees, casting all our fears on Him. Wetting our bed covers or floors with our tears of worry. We must leave those worries on the altar if at all possible. Let’s face it though. No matter, how connected with God we are, we are human. We are frail. We worry, we fret. We pick those worries back up and carry them with us.

Sometimes, we need to show our afraid. Let it out; scream it to the world. We must be authentic in our pursuits and in dealing with the daily problems, trials, and storms.

Maybe someone needs to see our afraid, but then see us dig in our heels and say no Satan; not today. God is supreme. He heals.

Jesus holds us in His hands and no matter what we face; He is there a present, faithful force against the dark tide.

I kissed my mom and said goodbye as they wheeled her away on the gurney. My heart beating with fear, my “afraidness” probably vivid on my face. My mom looked at me with faith beaming from her countenance. “It is going to be okay. I have faith He will see me through.”

I stand amazed. She is having the surgery, but isn’t it just like her to reassure me; a quick goodbye and she is taken back.

You mother sounds like such an inspiration. I am sorry you are having to deal with her surgery, and I hope that you are comforted now. Please update when you can…I am interested to know how she is, and how you are, my sisters in Christ whom I’ve never met.

Praying for your momma! And did I know that your dad lives (or is it lived) with a mental illness?
