| Day 16 |
By Mary Hill
This week flew by and I am about to start a new one in less than an hour and a half. It wasn’t an easy week as I related in a post a few days ago. We had a stomach ailment in the house.
Luckily for us, but unluckily for my future son-in-law, it was not contagious. He was sick for three days. He kept his job, however, but had to go the emergency room to get the required sick note. I hate that about some American jobs. If you don’t have a doctor’s note when you are out sick, you get fired for being sick on the spot. No questions asked.
He doesn’t have insurance yet because the company he works for has not given him the paperwork. He works third shift, and of course the paperwork is locked up in the manager’s office, and he leaves before the store reopens. I am going to check on this tomorrow for him because the federal deadline to sign up for insurance without getting fined is March 31.
In the meantime, he has to pay the hospital at least $10 a month for the several hundred dollar emergency room visit. I would have taken him to the doctor’s office, but my daughter and he were afraid that they would not get a note for the prior day. We couldn’t get an appointment for the first day of his illness because there were no available appointments at my doctor’s office. The bummer thing is he went to the emergency room, and they could not treat the illness because it was a bacterial infection and had to run its course. They gave him some special pills to hydrate him though because he was severely dehydrated.
So the main things to be thankful about this whole situation: no one else got sick and he is better and back at work.
On a brighter note: I enjoyed birds and flowers this week which helped me with my personal pain battles. I have shared openly before about my ongoing illness and the fact that this blog is an outlet to help me cope. Also my wonderful husband bought me some more bird seed, and we are going to set up a special feeding station so I can get even better pictures to share.
In the meantime, I posted some bird pictures Friday as part of my Five Minute Friday essay. If you are interested in seeing that post click here. Below are even more pictures that I captured this week to celebrate and be thankful for the beginning of Spring. I hope you enjoy.
Also I still have the flower arrangements from my daughter’s pageant on March 1. I put them in vases and they are still thriving. I have enjoyed the splashes of color in my dining room.

Absolutely beautiful flowers!!! Hope everyone recovered quickly.
I am quite dismayed with the adversarial stance some employers take with employees. I know some of it comes from employees abusing their positions, however, the hoops your future son-in-law had to jump through, while he was not yet well are unreasonable.
yeesh you guys just gotta shake the sickies huh? Hope all is better this week… WOW you have some lovely birds… is that a cat under that roof on the first pick with free bird seed? I love how the bird is looking under it … he looks kind of suspicious…
Hope all is well in your home now 🙂 Great pictures by the way!
I am glad to hear that your son in law is feeling better and I hope everyone else stays well.
Gorgeous photos of the birds and flowers…thank you so much for sharing them! They are so cheerful!
Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos. Sorry your future son in law has such a hard time with his illness and getting insurance. Chin up and do help him make the deadline. I’m sorry that your illness still causes you pain but I’m glad you keep a positive outlook. Your blog is a shining light and I love reading each and every post Mary.
It’s so nice that the flowers from your daughter’s pageant have lasted so well.
I hope the sick-note business gets fixed soon.
