Learning from Risk Takers

April 15, 2015 By Mary Hill 5 Comments

Einstein

“Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.”  Albert Einstein

Do you believe the saying that with great risks come great rewards? I do believe this statement. You only have to look at history to see how true this saying is.
What if Einstein did not take risks and think outside the box? We would not have had the “theory of relativity.” Einstein’s scientific theories layed the foundation for space travel, nuclear energy, and laser technology.

What about Thomas Edison who famously said, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up?” Edison patented more than 1,000 inventions in his life time including the incandescent light bulb, the motion picture camera, the phonograph (or record player) and invented a new source of rubber from the goldenrod plant for automobile tires.
Women inventors also took great risks during the 20th Century that lead to life improving machines. Inventors like Mary Anderson who invented the windshield wipers. The next time you get into your car think about the number of fatalities and traffic accidents that would occur every year without this important invention. Many people were cured of blindness because of the risk taking of another modern day inventor, Patricia Bath. Bathinvented the Cataract Laserphaco Probe in 1988. The laser probe painlessly vaporizes cataracts from patients’ eyes. You can find an even more extensive list of women inventors at  http://inventors.about.com/od/womeninventors/a/women_inventors.htm.

Innovation requires risks and imagination, but with true innovation comes life changing discoveries which are happening even today. If you visit the “Innovation Excellence” website you will find other awe inspiring examples of taking great risks and achieving great success. One story details how a group of inventors have turned play into electricity for villages in Africa that are off the power grid. Life is about taking chances and growing as a result of our successes and failures; so take risks and dream big. You never know:  what you create might change humanity forever.

You’re so right, Mary – with great risk comes great reward, so long as the risk is taken with proper foresight or strategic planning or common sense, etc. What’s life without a little risk sometimes???

I love this. It is so true. We live with all kinds of amazing inventions that we take for granted. The world would look SO different without the forward thinkers and risk takers. I let fear hold me back too much. This is an inspired post!

If you don’t risk, you haven’t lived. If you don’t risk, you will never have any of your dreams come true. If you don’t risk being laughed it, you will never better the world. Good post.

I love listening to risk takers tell their stories. Bankrupt, homeless, but yet they all managed to pick them selves up and become wealthy. Sometimes it took awhile, but these risk takers motivated me to take my own dream and run with it. Now I am on my way to the great wealth part, followed you here from A Little R & R Wednesday party.

Loved this! I’ve had success only because I’ve failed so many more times. It’s impossible to accomplish anything of meaning in life without encountering failure. Take the risk, it’s how we become stronger.
