The Haiku is a traditional Japanese poem. The background and origin of this genre of poetry is covered well on several websites including Dr. L Wheeler’s website on poetry resources. Another great resource for teachers on the haiku is http://www.kidzone.ws/poetry/haiku.htm.

Now for your quiz. Can someone tell me how to write a Haiku poem? Remember, this format for the poem from your school days:
five syllables
seven syllables
five syllables
Okay class, do you remember what the traditional subject matter of the Haiku is? If you wrote “nature” on your paper give yourself an A. The best Haiku poems are beautiful for their simplicity and a play of imagery.

This is an old Haiku of mine featuring five mini verses. I found this in a journal from my college days. I love this format.
Rain patters on roof
Birds swoop through the eaves flying
Through the misty air
Spider webs glide on
Icy winds that kiss the dew
On a spring morning
Weep not for winter’s
Passing like an old woman
Lacing her grave cloth
Her splendid sister
Waits in the eaves to present
Shining red tulips
Butterflies and birds
Pansies and corn flowers dance
In meadows awake

Great idea and haiku. Some people are good at writing them, some not. It’s not in my bag of skills. Sorry.

Lovely haiku. I’ve always enjoyed them. If I had the time I could write one, but there just aren’t enough hours in this day. Maybe another time. Yours is beautiful. 🙂
