Finding Time for Silence and Reflection

December 16, 2013 By Mary Hill 11 Comments

By Mary Hill

It is Christmas time, and I have to steal moments of silence as I sit and watch my Christmas tree lights blink. It seems we just hurry and hurry. We get lost in the present buying, the tree decorating, the cooking, and, whew, the Christmas parties. It makes me breathless just thinking about it all.

I am forcing myself to slow down and contemplate; to write. I am finding a quiet moment of “silence.” You should too. Take a moment as you read this. Slow down. Breathe, breathe, deeper. Focus your mind on these thoughts:

Beauty, kindness, love, serenity, quietness, nobility, pureness, and God. (Phillipians 4:8)

Remember why we celebrate to begin with: a little baby who came not to live but to die. To pay the ultimate price for our forgiveness and to set the final example for how we should live.

I was listening to the radio the other night. A Christian preacher spoke about his visit with an Ayatollah. He asked him to recall how Abraham climbed the mountain to sacrifice his son because God asked him to. He said not to worry about the old argument which son, but to imagine the moment as God turned away from His only Son on a tree dieing for mankind. Then recognize Jesus, and this illustration of God’s great love for us. How could you not want to serve a God as wonderful as that? The Muslim Shaw wished him peace and said yes, that was so true.

Peace, joy and good will toward all men. Jesus wants us to find these things. Love your neighbor as yourself. Lay down your life for others. Such wonderful ideals that shine brightly this Christmas season. Decorate your hearts and minds with these beautiful gems and share them with all that you know.

It;s very hard to find a little piece of silence during this time of year. Reflecting on the true meaning of Christmas is what we need to do, I see more shopping going on then anything in this world around us. Great to know there are still many that still reflect on Jesus. Found you and now following you from thumping Thursday 🙂

Good thoughts, Mary. We really need to savor the moment and meaning of Christmas. It’s so easy to get lost in the rush.

We must never forget the true meaning of Christmas. Whether it is the birth of Jesus or just good will to your fellow man.
