Fingers burning,
knee throbbing,
hearing voices in the night,
sleep evades,
but I still believe
God has it all under control
even pain, loss, and hurt
the white noise on the tv
leaves me lonely.
I wonder why must I sit in the dark
rubbing joints and stretching.
Sleep evades in a whisper.
God captures it all in His hands of mercy
He takes our struggles and uses them for good.
I am angry and sinned again today
couldn’t control my tongue.
Pain and shame now are friends.
Why am I such a failure at anger?
I can’t blame the pain.
I wish I could cut my tongue out.
God forgives, He heals
Even when we are at our worst
And don’t deserve
His touch.
I wait now for the night.
Will I sleep or fight
Regret over a day, long gone,
Over mistakes that I long
To correct?
Pain and shame hold hands
As the clock ticks away
I sit and watch the dark lands
In my mind that make me sway
While rest and dreams delay
I really need His scripture
His touch, His love
He is there.
I just sing out and picture
Him extending His hands
and enveloping me with a huge hug.
My eyes close.
I lay it all at His feet.
Pain gives way to
His gift of rest and relief.

This post is my eleventh installment in both the 31 Days online writing challenge started by home blogger, Myquillyn Smith (The Nester) and Kate Motaung’s Five Minute Friday and her 31-Day Five Minute Writing Challenge. I am combining her prompts for day 12 and day 14: gone and rest.
Also joining Two Shoes in Texas who is celebrating her 100th installment of her hop, Two Shoes Tuesday. She is giving away a $100 Amazon Gift Card as a way of celebrating. Check out the contest by clicking here. She gives two word prompts every week. Writers can use either prompt to write original poems, fiction, or creative nonfiction. You have over 150 prompts to choose from because you can select one from her entire inventory of prompts since her weekly writing link up began. For my poem, I selected Prompt 63 from 1/28/14 – PAIN or GAIN. If you love creative writing, I encourage you to join up with this lovely hop every week. It is so much fun, and the writers are so supportive.

this is beautiful and well thought out…love how you share your thoughts in poetry. Thanks for linking up to What You Wish Wednesday.
Your lovely poem says it all when pain and loss of sleep blend into the dark of night. May God cover you with his blanket of love and grace and bring you the peaceful rest that only He can give. Thank you for sharing your awesome post with us here at “Tell Me a Story.” http://letmetelluastory.blogspot.com/
My eyes close.
I lay it all at His feet.
Pain gives way to
His gift of rest and relief.
I hope that in giving this over you find self forgiveness as well….I like to think God wants that peace for us as well….lovely piece Mary.
I can well imagine sleepless nights, regretting one’s actions. I am so glad you find comfort in your religion.
Once again, Mary, your words resonated with my heart. I deal with those fibro night pains too, and of course if it is a stressful day, it aggravates everything so much more. Then we really feel both the pain and the sadness of having not quite made the grade we set for ourselves. Thankfully, we have a loving Father and bestower of grace, who sees not our flaws but the beauty and perfection with which He created us, a true reflection of His own. Sometimes I think that falling short speaking out in anger, is a way of keeping us humble, the guilt reminds us that this is not who we want to be. And tomorrow, after hopefully some blessed sleep we try again, each day is a new day to share our faith, love, and blessings. I know your heart, and what a caring person you are. Today might not have gone well, but tomorrow you will do ok. Sending you prayers for a night of pain relief and sleep with beautiful dreams that wake you smiling. XOXO Thank you for such a deep and sincere post for our special edition of Two Shoes Tuesday!
This is beautiful. Thank God for His mercy and rest in the midst of our mess!
I can only imagine your pain – but I can greatly appreciate your hope and faith. Joy does come…but not without pain….sigh..you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Beautiful poem. Made me think of Ps 30:5….tears may last through the night but joy comes with the morning.
It is at times like this we are given somehow a strength we didn’t know we had to bear the unbearable. I hope that in your writing that this helps you too.
Such a beautiful poem. Thank you for sharing what you are going through with us. <3
It’s hard to feel God’s love in the midst of pain. I love the picture of God’s hand reaching to envelop us in a big hug! Thank you, Mary.
oh my… if only I could write so eloquently and beautifully like you do…
He always works through our pain so that something good can come out of it!
Love, Anna xoxo
Pain can be such a joy-thief. Bless you.
Beautiful! <3 (and I love how you combined the two prompts!)
“Pain and shame now are friends.” Such a starkly true statement.
“I lay it all at His feet. Pain gives way to His gift of rest and relief.” Words of guidance and hope!
Thank you for both images.
I am so happy that you enjoyed my writing. Thanks for stopping by.
Tossing and turning at night in pain physically or emotionally is excruciating and always is magnified in the wee hours. Breathing deeply and turning it over to God always brings Peace. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you so much for your support. It means a lot to me that you stopped by.
