A Day No Pigs Would Die :
A Book That Inspired A Love for Reading
By Leigh Ellen Eades
Growing up I loved to check the mail. I’d run to the mailbox each day in anticipation of finding an envelope or package with my name on it. My momma had subscribed me to several reading clubs and books were arriving continually. I’d safely say I had more books than toys. Yet, no matter how many books arrived, one thing was still missing. My desire to read.
Early in my reading journey I began comparing my ability to the ability of the other kids in my class. I saw myself as “less than,” and as a result, I closed up. I dreaded being called on to read aloud in class and writing answers to comprehension questions made me want to cry! Sadly, I didn’t enjoy reading.
Then I started high school and was given an energetic ninth grade English teacher. Never before had a teacher made me enjoy English quite like she did. Every lesson she taught captured my attention. I looked forward to anything she taught, until the day she announced we were responsible for a book report. My heart sank!
Our class took a trip to the school library to check out books. I watched as others ran to the shelves and immediately found books they couldn’t wait to read. Slowly, I strolled around the room as discouragement breathed down my neck. Thousands of books stared at me, but none of them looked appealing. How would I pass this assignment?
My empty-handed wandering must have caught my teacher’s attention. She came alongside me and struck up a conversation. I didn’t want to disappoint her, but I just wasn’t into reading. We talked a little while, and then she said, “I think I know just the book for you.” I wasn’t convinced, but I trusted her and checked it out.
A Day No Pigs Would Die (Robert Newton Peck) became the book that convinced me I could love to read. After years of dread, I found a book I couldn’t put down. I completed my book report with joy and confidence. And, I’m certain it was because a teacher saw me wandering around the library, took time to learn my interests, and then introduced me to my niche in the literary world.
Yes, the girl who once dreaded reading now plans her daily activities around having time to read! And, someday she hopes to author a book of her own!
