Book Description:
Set in the South Carolina Lowcountry and packed with Southern charm and memorable characters, Her Sister’s Shoes is the story of three sisters—Samantha, Jackie, and Faith—who struggle to balance the demands of career and family while remaining true to themselves.
Samantha Sweeney has always been the glue that holds her family together, their go-to girl for love and support. When an ATV accident leaves her teenage son in a wheelchair, she loses her carefully constructed self-control.
In the after-gloom of her dreaded fiftieth birthday and the discovery of her husband’s infidelity, Jackie realizes she must reconnect with her former self to find the happiness she needs to move forward.
Faith lacks the courage to stand up to her abusive husband. She turns to her sisters for help, placing all their lives at risk.
In the midst of their individual challenges, the Sweeney sisters must cope with their mother’s mental decline. Is Lovie in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, or is her odd behavior normal for a woman her age? No one, including Lovie, understands her obsession with a rusty key she wears around her neck.
For fans of Elin Hildebrand, Her Sister’s Shoes is a contemporary women’s novel that explores and proves the healing power of family.
My Review:
“Having a sister is like having a best friend you can’t get rid of. You know whatever you do, they’ll still be there.”
“Sisters function as safety nets in a chaotic world simply by being there for each other.”
Ashley’s storytelling skills are top notch. In this wonderful novel, Ashley weaved the heartwarming stories of each sister into a page turner that I could not put down. Sam, Jackie, and Faith will inspire you with their love for one another and realness. You will identify with their struggles and find hope in their courage and love.
Of all three, I identified most with Faith because of my own personal struggle with domestic violence. I know firsthand what it is like to caught up in the trap of an abusive relationship. My story differed in that I did not have a child. I did and still have a dog though that I loved like my own child. Faith and I are similar in that it took seeing our beloved child in danger to stand up to our abusers. Like Faith, I also had support from (non-related) sisters to help me escape my situation.
Another faucet of this book that I loved was the beautiful setting. I could feel the humidity and smell the salt air. I loved the descriptions of long drives down narrow highways adjacent to salt marshes and the descriptive scenes involving the beautiful wildlife such as pelicans, sea gulls, and picturesque herons.
Like the scenery, the lives of these sisters are painted in beautiful colorful hues of experience, love, and determination. Each sister is strong, kind, and loving. They are women you want to befriend and get to know better. Their humor will endear you. Their relationships as sisters are tangled and realistic full of sibling rivalries and complicated memories.
Ashley Farley is my new favorite author. If you enjoy reading Kristin Hannah and Lisa Scottoline, you will love Ashley Farley’s books. I loved Her Sister’s Shoes and can’t wait for her next novel!
