Celebrating Dr. Seuss and Reading

March 2, 2015 By Mary Hill 2 Comments

Dr. Seuss: The Cat in the Hat

It is Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Do you remember your favorite Dr. Seuss book?

I loved Horton Hears a Who. Horton found a small speck and heard a voice, crying for help. His response:

““A person’s a person, no matter how small.”
― Dr. Seuss, Horton Hears a Who!

My love of reading grew from a young age because of my mother’s love of language. I can still hear her reading, “Green Eggs and Ham.” She collected the Dr. Seuss books and let us stay up whenever a Dr. Seuss special was on tv.

My mother’s love of reading remains with me today. I love poetry, fiction, and books galore.

Dr. Seuss had a magic wand filled with rhythmic cadence. His books were also allegorical and took on issues of that are still relevant today. They were about the environment, freedom, and evils of prejudice.  They were more than children’s stories; they explored deep themes in rhyme.

How do you inspire the love of reading today either to your children or your class?

In my research, I found this interesting movie about the life of Dr. Seuss. It is a little long, but has great songs and clips from many of the Dr. Seuss’s specials and films.

If you want a quicker history and discussion of Dr. Seuss’s books check out this video:

Hello Mary! I love Dr. Seuss! I still haven’t outgrown his books or movies! Ha, ha! The Cat in the Hat and How the Grinch Stole Christmas are my favorites but I love them all. The videos are great. Thanks for sharing! 😀

I loved Go Do Go. I can recall reading it over and over and loving how the nighttime was cast in a deeper blue. cheered when all the dogs got to the tree for the party. I loved that book and imagine I learned to read via that text.

      Thanks or inspiring the memory:)
