#LMMLinkup: Advent Resources

December 4, 2017 By Mary Hill 15 Comments

Blessed Christmas Advent

We light the candles of Advent to inspire.

The beauty of the season brings warmth and hope to our souls.

Advent marks a season of Thanksgiving

As we prepare our hearts

For the babe borne in the manger to die for our sins.

Yesterday, we celebrated the first Sunday of Advent. As we walk through this blessed season, I wanted to share with you some wonderful resources to keep in your hearts.

Note some of these links are affiliate links to Amazon. If you use them to purchase the resource, I will receive a small percentage of the sales.

The Empty Seat. When our holidays aren’t merry, unique challenges exist for everyone in the home. There is hope. We will see them again and that’s worth celebrating. #emptyseat #HeartbreakHoliday #Christmasloss #memory

Susan started this very poignant post on her blogged and continued it on Julie’s blog, Unmasking the Mess. Susan shares how  to help those who have suffered a terrible loss and have an empty seat at their tables in their lives. Her tips are wonderful and  straightforward. One even made me cry. How to Be the Light in a Dark World

By Rachel Lee

Be the light. This is the phrase I often use to inspire my kids each morning, before I send them off to school. "Go. Be the light." It's a simple concept really, and yet all-encompassing. But what does it truly mean? How can we be the light to the world around us? Click to read, as I unpack this timely message, and reveal what it means to be the light in a dark world.

This post simply touched me to the core. My favorite paragraphs:

“We don’t need to shout out Jesus loves you from a megaphone, in order to shine the light of Christ into the lives of others.

In fact, please DON’T do that!

Sometimes- MOST TIMES- all it takes is a kind word, a thoughtful act, or a simple smile, to make someone’s day.”

Rachel shares a poignant example of how to be the light to others that will melt your heart.

As we move through the Holiday season, I am so inspired now to be a light to others. Will you join me? Please read this article.

I have such fond memories of lighting the advent candles/ wreath at my aunt’s house each year we went to her house for Christmas. She lived far away so we’d stay for an extended trip and it was such a fun tradition that our family never really subscribed to.

Thank you for the advent resources. I am going to take a look at “In the manager.” For some reason when I unpacked my Christmas decorations my advent books didn’t show up. I’m sad but maybe its time for some fresh ideas.

Thanks for the recommendations, Mary! Unwrapping the Names of Jesus, looks especially good!

Also, THANK YOU for the feature this week! What a wonderful surprise to wake up to this morning. I’m glad my story touched your heart, as it did mine. I appreciate your kind words this morning. 🙂

(On a slightly different note) I’m not sure if it’s just me, but I thought I would let you know that the “click to tweet” doesn’t seem to be working… Just something to look into when you get a moment. I’d love to point others back here. 😉

Some of my favorites are Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus: Experiencing the Peace and Promise of Christmas by Nancy Guthrie, Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room: Daily Family Devotions for Advent, also by Nancy Guthrie (even though this one is designed for the whole family, I enjoyed reading it alone as well), and The Women of Christmas: Experience the Season Afresh with Elizabeth, Mary, and Anna by Liz Curtis Higgs. Currently I’m reading Gospel Meditations for Christmas by Chris Anderson, Joe Tyrpak, and Michael Barrett.
