Teaser Tuesday: A Riveting Book about South Africa

July 8, 2014 By Mary Hill 4 Comments

By Mary Hill

This week I am reading a book provided to me by BookPlex .  I will receive a small payment for my honest review of this book. Plus, I have added an affiliate link to Amazon with the cover of the book. If you click on the cover and decide to purchase, I will make a small commission. Thanks for your support.

My first reaction to this book as I have read it is awe. I love the narrative. Here is my teaser for this week. I hope you enjoy it! I will also publish a review of this book.

The book encompassed her survival as demanded by the government. Her photo from ten years ago revealed a sullen teenage girl. Her was hair short then, now grown long with braids and covered by an orange scarf. Already condemned to a lifetime of imprisonment, Lena, like the rest of her people, had to seek stamped permission indicating where she could live and work, and when and if she had paid her taxes; but most of all, the passbook symbolized the fact that she was deprived of citizenship. Everywhere she went—to the store, to work, to school, to visit friends or family in other townships—police would stop her to scrutinize her passbook. Many fingers had sullied her pages. They seemed to savor the moments when they could demoralize her and her people.  K.P. Kollenborn. How the Water Falls (Kindle Locations 182-183).

This looks really interesting but also emotional. I must add that I love your header! Mine has a cat also. I don’t believe I have been to your blog before so I did follow a couple of different ways. Enjoy your book!
