I am not a decorator or gardener. I just love to dabble and try to explore ways to make my simple home attractive and warm: a refuge for family and friends.
My mother is the real decorator. I turn to her a lot for help and inspiration. The other day she showed up with a bit of history. About 10 years ago, we gave her an old quilt to restore. My mother is retired, but she loves to work on quilts and crochets and cross stitches. I was surprised when she returned this heirloom that she had restored for us.
This quilt has been in the family for decades. My husband’s great grandmother created it nearly 50 years ago. I don’t have a quilt rack; so I am uses the back of my retirement rocker to display it for now.
We also bought a new rug this weekend (above). I am going to look for pretty pillows to make my sofa more colorful in the next few weeks.
I also enjoy simple things in my kitchen/laundry room. This piece below makes a great storage place for my utensils that I want to keep at hands reach when I am cooking. I have the smallest kitchen ever. It is about 10 feet long by eight feet wide so storage is definitely a premium.
My attention has turned to gardening now too as spring slowly meanders into summer. I have started my container garden. I am using colored and decorated planters to add pop to my front steps.

The 50-year-old quilt is amazing. There may be a history in each of the beautiful piece of cloth in the quilt.

I decided to grow basil in my office this year… It smells great in here! I adore old quilts with a bit of memory in every stitch! that one is divine!!!!!
As a mere male the pussy utensil holder was a real delight to see. Sadly living in an apartment my days of dabbling in the garden are over. However I do try keep a few herbs going to help in the cooking.
All these pictures and projects made me smile, Mary! It is all the little touches that we add that make a house a home… and a refuge from the harsher world outside. The quilt is lovely! I have several that have been made for me as gifts, but I wish I had one of the ones my grandmother had piece by hand. To my knowledge, none are left now. As a child I didn’t realize how much love she stitched into those pieces!
I love your new floor rug, and the bright colored pots of flowers! I smiled at your tiny kitchen space, as I had one just like that before I met Papa Bear. Work space was at a premium, as was storage space, but I got along just fine and like you, found a few fun ways to keep things I used accessible.
