This week did not fly by. It crawled because we were snowed in beginning Tuesday.
- We had five inches of snow and about an inch of ice. The snow accumulation would have been more if all that fell had stuck. The first day it was too warm and the snow melted as it fell.
2) By Wednesday, we had about four to five inches on the ground. I measured with a ruler in different areas of the yard and kept getting 4.5 to 5.2. I guess snow piled up higher closer to buildings than out in the middle of the yard. Some of it melted Wednesday afternoon, but refroze that night as ice. We had another round of snow Thursday morning. I would guess about another half an inch fell.
3) Then we were blessed because the ice storm that was predicted never came and we kept our power. We just got the beautiful snow and wonderful family time.
4) My daughter tried to have fun in the snow with a sled that her papa made her Thursday morning, but we didn’t have a steep enough hill in our neighborhood. It was sweet of him to try though. 🙂
5) By Thursday night, we had cabin fever, but my husband is brave. He is one of the best drivers on snow in the South. He took us a tour of the roads, even though SC highway department officials said to give it one more day before getting out on the roads because they were still icy. We were low on gas too, but he said and I quote, “We have more of a chance of ending up in a ditch then running out of gas.” I felt reassured, not. Anyway, it was worth it taking a dangerous road trip Thursday evening when he got off work. 6) Our local Cracker Barrel was open, and we got some Southern comfort food.
7) On Friday, my daughter had another snow day, and we spent it together. She read her Warriors book. We played in the snow a little more. It was almost gone.
8) Valentine’s night, my husband and I went on a date night for Valentines. We had a lovely dinner and then went shopping for Valentines. I was shocked at how much merchandise was still in the stores. We had not been able to shop all week. I hope my daughter will get to have a Valentine’s party at school, but we won’t know til tomorrow.
9) We survived a major earthquake, well, by Southerner’s standards. It was a 4.1 on the Richter scale and was the second largest quake in a 100 years in our area. It originated in Edgefield, SC, but the quake was felt from Greenville to Augusta, GA! We were returning to my husband’s sister house to pick up KR when it hit. We felt her house shake and heard a large crashing sound. My daughter was on her top floor and came running down the steps with her cousin.
My daughter cried for awhile after the quake. She was definitely traumatized, but we finally calmed her. I am thankful she was not hurt, and we are all okay. The quake just ended our week on a really weird note.
10) I am definitely thankful that I am sitting here finalizing this post. Beautiful snow and an earthquake happened all in the same week? We are safe, healthy, and blessed.

Just when you think the snow storm and all the ice are ruining your days, along comes an earthquake to really scare you. I’ve been through tornadoes, blizzards, hurricanes and dust storms but the worst thing I ever felt were the few earthquakes I’ve been in. I’m glad you and your family are okay. 🙂
Oh my gosh! That is a lot of weather trauma for one week. Glad you’re okay. I experienced an earthquake (extremely rare in Michigan) when I was in junior high and I still remember it to this day. I hope the weird weather is over for you!
Earthquakes can be quite scary, even little ones. All that snow, then an earthquake! Glad you got some comfort food!

You’ve really been hit. We pray with March right around the corner that the weather calms along with your daughter. I live around Buffalo, NY, lots of wind and snow but no earthquake…oops…Hope I didn’t jinks myself. Hope you have a better week ahead.

Safe, healthy, and blessed are amazing thankful things. I love that your husband built your daughter a sled but bummer that she wasn’t able to find a hill to use it on. And um, yeah, I would not have been comforted by my husband telling me that we’re more likely to be in a ditch than run out of gas, either! Yikes. Oh and now, I’m craving Cracker Barrel. Yum. I am in love with their dumplin’s and their country fried steak and eggs.
So glad that you neither ran out of gas nor ended up in the ditch.
As a former Californian, I would say your 4.1 was nothing. However, when it’s your first and/or only earthquake, then it’s BIG.Those suckers are scary! It’s a good thing they are short.
Your snow is beautiful. Hopefully, all of it has melted from the roads by now and you are back to being more likely to run out of gas than run into a ditch!
I saw the title and thought you were writing from New England at first. We had snow and an earthquake this week, too. 🙂 The snow is up to my knees now, but the earthquake was only 2.4, and I didn’t feel it. We had one a few years ago while I was at work, and the whole building was shaking. Really scary; I don’t blame your daughter for being upset! A lot of weirdness for SC this week, that’s for sure! Hope things are back to “normal” soon!

Definitely a winter of crazy weather throughout the country! It’s fascinating to me to see how some parts of the country handle snow differently. In the Midwest we take it for granted. Snow is a part of our winter life and we learn to drive in it (and ice). Whereas, many parts of our country do not experience it regularly and do not have the resources to adapt as quickly. Later this week, temperatures are expected to rise in my part of country. We will soon have major slush and flooding.
Yes, Nature has certainly dealt South Carolina an odd week! I remember the first earthquake I was in. I was a teenager, and my mom and I were in the finished basement. The couch cushions started shaking, and my mom said, “what are your brothers doing NOW?!” My brothers got into so much mischief when growing up, my mom actually thought the earthquake was them!
I’m ready for the snow and cold to go away, yet more nastiness is predicted for this afternoon. Ugh.
You are wonderful Mary. Many would complain but you turned this week into an amazing one of thankfulness. Glad your daughter is okay and that your family is well.

What a strange week, with snow and an earthquake! If it makes your daughter feel any better, my first earthquake was my scariest, even when subsequent earthquakes were stronger. Not that you live in earthquake territory, but in case your daughter does feel another one sometime, hopefully it won’t be quite as frightening for her.
