Power of Story : Literacy Musing Mondays

August 9, 2015 By Mary Hill 9 Comments

Welcome back to Literacy Musing Mondays, Week 29.  Literacy Musing Mondays is a weekly linkup that features the best posts on literacy and reading.  The power of story and place touches us!  We love to share our voices and stories.

This week we continue our guest post series!  I am so excited to be connected to such a great sphere of bloggers who love literacy, reading, and learning.  Our guest poster this week our own, co-host Ashley Hales.

“It’s Always Been About Story”

I remember sitting with a spiral notebook on a rock by a little man-made lake at the end of our cul-de-sac. I was writing some horrible, pre-teen version of Christian fiction with characters named things like Cordelia with auburn ringlets. It was a writing disaster. Yet, it’s always been about story for me. From the books I read on the laps of my parents, to my Fisher Price plastic record player (where I got to listen to books on record), to reading Tom Sawyer by the light of the headlights behind our car at night — story has always had me in its grip.

I loved English classes and diagramming sentences and all the literary theories in graduate school. Even when I wrote my PhD dissertation, I really just wanted to get lost in a novel, for the sheer joy of getting enveloped in something so much larger than myself. So I keep coming back to narrative and that’s why I’ve named my blog Circling the Story because I want my little corner of the internet to a virtual spot where we can pull up blankets and chairs and find ourselves heard as we share our own stories. All of our stories — the hard ones, the joyful ones, the ones where we are right in the middle.

Stories invite us to be vulnerable as we learn how to love and empathize with characters. They invite us into a world of imagination that is populated by people, events and places so different from our own. As they invite us to journey with characters, to be transformed along with them, we find ourselves changed by words. We are moved. We are changed. We have hope to face our laundry piles and our office jobs and our families. I hope to hear how stories have captured your imagination and I’d love for you to add your own at Circling the Story by going here to submit yours.

Now back to the linkup. What have you read this week? What literacy activities have you participated in with your family and loved ones. Please share. All family-friendly posts are welcome. 😉
