Lessons From Untangled

Do you battle with issues of inferiority? If you say, “No,” then I challenge you. I don’t think there is a human being alive that doesn’t have an inferiority complex.

I sometimes am so envious of 20 some-things, young women who have it all together. Look at what the world has to offer them now: the most advanced global communication tools ever. I mean where was blogging, Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook when I was 20?

It isn’t fair. I am disabled, washed up, and my life seems almost over, can I get a witness? Carey Scott discussion in her book, Untangled: Let God Loosen the Knots of Insecurity in Your Life,
on the biblical Elizabeth really hit home with me. If you remember, Elizabeth became the mother of John the Baptist very late in life when no one expected her to bare a child.

Looking back at my life is depressing. I came of age when phones were tethered to the wall, when VCRs were considered high tech. We didn’t even own one because they were so expensive.

I had to make do with an old, clunky typewriter. I typed crappy, still do. Then, I finally got a word processor typewriter and could see three lines at a time. I did not have all the fine dangle tools, these young whipper-snappers have now.

If only I was in my twenties now! I could really be someone. I could write my dream, best selling novel.  Instead, I can barely type on my computer and have to use a microphone to dictate my posts because of arthritis. I feel like the witch in the Disney animated film, Tangled. Green envy, jealous. Does anyone relate?

I am old, disabled, and inferior. All kidding aside, this feeling is no laughing matter. It is real for me, and I hope I am not alone here, right?

I battle daily with this feeling that the best of my life is long gone. Here is the clincher, however. I know in God’s eyes, I am not washed up or “an old gray mare.” Just like Carey writes:

“Age means nothing to God. Whether we’re one or one hundred, if we are breathing air on Planet Earth it’s because we still have value and purpose for the kingdom of Jesus. We may feel worthless to God because there is no spring in our step or twinkle in our eye, but he never stops seeing our immeasurable value.” (Page 44)

“It is important to know we are not alone in our I’m not good enough feelings and that God isn’t repulsed by our insecurities …. while we see our flaws as deal-breakers, God never has …. Instead, he puts a purpose on each of our lives regardless of how broken we are inside. I love knowing that. Only God can look past our messes for our messages.”

I have learned so much reading this book and I am only on Chapter 2, “First Tangle.”

I usually do not recommend a book or write the review until I finish it. This book though is so heartfelt and moving, I know I can safely recommend it. Carey’s message has already touched me to the core. It is worth investing in!

(Note: this was written earlier. I have now read through more than half the book. I still love it and highly recommend it. I think reading it may even inspire more posts this week. We will see though. 🙂
