J is for Jack Prelutsky

April 11, 2013 By Mary Hill 10 Comments

By Mary Hill

Named the first Children’s Poet Laureate by the Poetry Foundation, Jack Prelutsky is one of the most renown poets for children.  I loved him as a kid and as a librarian. Who wouldn’t love the poetry of someone who could create such memorable characters? His poetry has made hundreds of thousands of kids laugh and giggle.  Prelutsky has been writing poetry since the late 1960s.  Do you remember Dora Diller who ate a catepillar? How else would we know to be glad that we have nose on our face if not for Jack Prelutsky?

Be Glad Your Nose is on Your Face

Be glad your nose is on your face,
not pasted on some other place,
for if it were where it is not,
you might dislike your nose a lot.

Imagine if your precious nose
were sandwiched in between your toes,
that clearly would not be a treat,
for you’d be forced to smell your feet.

Love it! This reminds me of Shell Silverstein, one of my childhood favorites. I love when writers encourage children to be silly and creative, to have fun and laughs when reading!

    Happy Blogging!

Great poem! Made me laugh. I’ll have to share that with my daughters when they wake up this morning.
