Great Moms in History

Mother’s Day is just two days away.  What makes a great mother?  What qualities do you have on your list: someone who can mulitask, run a marathon; keep her house spotless; work 60 hours a week and still be there for everything her family needs; endless and boundless energy never ceasing to love and give.

Well, I am a failure if I were to try to live up to this list.  No mom ever has been perfect.  The best moms are the one’s who know they are not perfect and do not expect perfection from anyone else.  I look at dust bunnies hopping under my bed and wrinkle my nose.  I really need to clean, but my daughter needs my attention and she wants me to read to her, talk to her, or play with her.  She wants me to make her the center of my world. Housework and perfection can wait, that is my motto.

I know we need to clean. We need to keep our homes healthy but not spotless.  Remember it is all about balance. What do I know? I am just a mom.  I have no super intelligence to offer anyone. This belief is just my own.  You can agree or agree to disagree. We are moms, and we all make our own ways. No judgments allowed right?

I have a poll for everyone. Who do you think are the greatest moms in history and why?
  
One woman on top of my list is Abagail Adams, wife of the second president, John Adams and the mother of the sixth president of the United States, John Quincy Adams.

She had zeal for her children and also the rights of others. She is best known for the correspondence she sent to her husband. Her impact on the early foundation of our country is hard to measure, but she was truly a great woman who cared about her country and her family.

One of mhy favorite quotes: 

“I most sincerely wish that some more liberal plan might be laid and executed for the Benefit of the rising Generation, and that our new Constitution may be distinguished for encouraging Learning and Virtue. If we mean to have Heroes, Statesmen and Philosophers, we should have learned women. The world perhaps would laugh at me and accuse me of vanity, But you I know have a mind too enlarged and liberal to disregard the Sentiment. If much depends as is allowed upon the early education of youth and the first principles which are instill’d take the deepest root, great benefit must arise from literary accomplishments in women.”

Another top mom for me of course is my own mom, Katherine Brown.  She taught me to think for myself and to never give up.  She forced me to work hard and go to school and college. Without her, I would not be where I am today.

This summer I plan to:  1. blog a lot. 2. Spend quality time with my daughter and grands doing special projects that I found on my blogging friend’s pinterest sites (more on this later). 3. Take a great vacation with the family to a nice getaway place like the mountains or beach. We are still in the planning stages.
