Earlier in Fall 2014, I featured a review of fitness expert Lisa Lynn’s new book. I have been following her plan too as I start my New Year’s Journey to a new me.
I have also had the privilege to interview her and learn more about her as a person and about her zeal for helping others. Her answers to my questions which follow provided me with great inspiration for my own weight loss challenge as I faced the New Year.
Please provide a brief bio? What are your most memorable childhood experiences? Did you battle weight issues as a young woman? Can you share?
I’m best known for my 15 years as Martha Stewart’s trainer and my work on the DR. OZ show. I’m the mother of two teens who don’t listen to me at all (LOL) who I love very much. I’m proud to say I am married to the same man for over 25 years, and we have 4 rescue dogs! One for each of our laps!
My most memorable childhood experience was finding a puppy at the playground and bringing him home. We had to hide him from Mom because she wouldn’t let us keep him, so for two weeks this puppy lived in a shoe box in my closet. My brothers and I spoiled that puppy rotten! We ended up keeping him and named him Mr. Bo Jangles. He used to follow us to school every day. One day he even came inside the school looking for us! Every one of my favorite childhood memories included a pet.
I battled with weight issues and food addictions from the age of 2! In my book The Metabolism Solution, on page 1, I show a photo of me at two years of age inside the refrigerator eating cake! I have icing all over my face, and I can remember always having to struggle with food and sugar cravings. Not just the “I like candy” cravings— I battled with addictive kind of cravings.”
What was your greatest struggle in losing weight? How did you overcome it?
My greatest struggle with weight loss was that I lived for food and was addicted to all of the foods I had to STOP eating in order to reach my weight loss goals. Also, everything I needed to do to lose weight was so foreign to me that it completely overwhelmed me for the first month. I’ve learned that it’s a good sign and it means you’re doing things differently and that’s what it takes! I persevered the first month and “WHITE knuckled “ it until I began losing weight and feeling better. I knew I needed to do it deep in my heart, so I stopped listening to that voice that said “EAT THE CANDY” and I started listening to God’s voice instead.”
What are the obstacles to success in losing weight? How do you overcome them?
The obstacles that kept me from losing weight were actually things that I needed to change in order to be successful.
The biggest obstacle was that my husband was VERY skinny. In fact, he couldn’t gain weight and he ate voraciously every Saturday night. It was very tough for me to sit and watch him eat, so I joined him in eating and I gained 40 pounds! Of course, my weight gain was his fault, I thought (LOL). Also, we went out every Saturday night with the same friends who all needed to lose weight and ate terribly. I didn’t want to make a scene, so I ate right along with them and struggled with losing weight until I decided to take care of my needs! I began asking if we could go to a healthier place to eat, to eat earlier and skip dessert and go for a walk instead. Everyone actually joined in and was glad to be doing healthier things. I tell everyone we all need a leader—YOU MIGHT AS WELL BE IT! Making healthier changes is the solution to overcoming obstacles!”
When I asked her this question: Do you have any scriptural recommendations that helped motivate you in your weight loss journey? I found we share the same scripture as our motivation tool!
Oh yes, I love Phil 4:13: ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!'”
How important is prayer in your weight loss journey? Do you have a specific prayer or scripture upon which you meditate?
Yes of course! I rely on the serenity prayer! I say the serenity prayer throughout my day:
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things that I can and the wisdom to know the difference.
I do take time very early every morning to have time alone with GOD so I can hear his voice clearly. This enters me and keeps my life in alignment with God’s will. This makes all of the difference in my life in every situation including food.
I remind myself that losing weight is more than looking good; it’s about honoring GOD with your body! You must read that chapter. You’ll love it! God gave us this precious gift called a body, and we don’t take very good care of it. It requires daily exercise and clean foods and adequate rest for optimal health!”
What would be your advice to someone who is trying to get serious about weight loss but can’t seem to make it happen?
YOU CAN DO IT! Start with a plan and dig deep to find your inner strength to succeed. 100% of the battles we face regarding weight loss are in our heads and that’s also where the battle is won, NOT in front of the refrigerator! Check out my “Metabolic Boosting Cleanse” to jumpstart your weight loss and you’re sure to lose 1 pound a day GUARANTEED-IF you do it!”

What a wonderful interview with Lisa! I am also on the tour and have read the book, which I believe has a lot of valid, helpful information in it. One thing I did not mention in my review is that after my first pregnancy, I lost my extra weight by watching what I ate and limiting my intake of fat grams (which Lisa espouses). This was a short term “fix”, perhaps, but it really helped me .
Ah loved this! Thank you for sharing!
