Faith in God

April 9, 2014 By Mary Hill 7 Comments

By Mary Hill

Faith is something that is so personal. Some days we seemed to have loads of it to spare. We know in our hearts that God is there and will meet all our needs.

Faith is something that keeps me going daily. I have so much in my life right now with family, health, and financial issues, but I am going to look to God daily for my needs. He doesn’t always provide the way I expect Him too, but He sees a much larger picture of my life than I do.

I will be honest I have days though when I throw major pity parties about things. My faith is tried, and I wonder is this for real. I have been a Christian all my life, and I still have my own unanswered questions.

The big question is how can I convince others that God and Christ are real when I struggle too? Those days I dig into the word and pray harder. Do I always get the answers I want? No, not at all.

I think if God handed me everything and made life easy, in the long run, I wouldn’t appreciate Him as much.  It is like if you give your child every desire in her heart, she expects it and thinks it is her right. She doesn’t learn. She doesn’t mature. She doesn’t become a better child. Spoiled children care about what they can get; not what they can give.

Another major question that burns in many minds: If God is an all knowing, loving God, why do bad things happen to good people?  I pray for the people in Washington and all those families who lost loved one in that terrible mud slides. I pray for the families who do not know where their loved ones are as the search for Flight 370 goes into day 31, and the black box’s batteries are about to die.

The grief and the emotional devastation is unimaginable. I have only lost my dad thus far in my short (long) life. I can relate to grief, and I can share my own experiences with my Dad’s sudden departure from this world. Life and death are God’s plans for us.

My Dad had his own personal struggles too, but in the end, he found God. The day he died, he marked all the Bibles in house to 2 Corinthians 5.  I was amazed as I picked up his study Bibles. He had five translations.

I wept when I opened I looked at the first Bible and read verse 1:

“For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.”

Just minutes earlier, I was crying and upset because my dad had died of a massive heart attack all by himself in my parent’s home. I was upset that he spent his last day without us.  God took him home so suddenly.

I needed comfort and saw his pile of Bibles by his chair where he read and studied. I picked the first one up and it was opened to this scripture. Then I looked at the second and it too was open to versus 6 through 8 which brought me so much peace.

6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:
7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

In the end faith in God is a daily walk until we are privileged to cross to the other side. God is calling all to him.

Please leave any prayer requests in the comments. I pray for all Christian and non Christian alike.  God bless you.

Great post. I was raised Christian, but I am skeptical of religion for a variety of reason. But I have had faith in God and his presence for some time. The older I get the more I feel I feel his presence, but as you point out I often struggle with the whys and as thankful as I am for everything He’s given me will throw myself an occassional pity party. Lately my prayer is for patience for waiting to see His plan for how the things I worry about will fall into place. Really enjoyed this post.

I’ll pray for your health and you pray for mine. Faith is so essential to our daily living, whether or not you are a Christian if you don’t put your trust in anything…what kind of person are you. Empty in my opinion.

I am deeply moved by the fact that your father “marked all the Bibles in house to 2 Corinthians 5.”
I am going to open my own Bible to 2 Corinthians 5, and read the chapter as soon as I post this comment.
Thank you for sharing this inspiring and encouraging article.
    Blessings to you.

I really like this post, Mary, because it is honest and real. Faith doesn’t come easy, and we really don’t inherit it. We can be taught who God is, but in the end we have to choose to believe or not believe. We all struggle with faith at times, I certainly have in my life, but in recent years I have come home to a place of rock solid knowing. There are no more doubts, and I understand that issues which trouble me are simply things that I do not yet fully understand. I am content to just believe, I do not always have to understand. I will add you to my prayer list too, so that some of the struggles you are facing right now can come to resolution and you can have a bit of breathing space and less worry. I know that God will bless you and restore you, He always does! Thank you for sharing your faith with us at Two Shoes Tuesday.
