Daring to Show Christian Love at Allume

October 28, 2014 By Mary Hill 3 Comments

Note: I wrote this short story Friday night during the Open Mic session at the Allume Conference. The theme word for the challenge: dare.
Hyatt Regency employee, Doris

Doris was our cleaning woman. She had grace and sweetness gleaming from her eyes.

Today, I met a cleaning woman in the hallway.  I stopped for a minute to tell her thank you. Her eyes drew me in, and I felt a pull to this woman. Her eyes brightened as I said, “Thank you for the clean room today.”

I was going to leave it there, but I felt a soft urging. “Tell her you see Christ in her. Tell her you know she must be a Christian.”

We had never met before. “I was like Lord, really. She is going to think I am so weird, but I obeyed and said, “Your spirit is so loving. I can see Christ in you. Eh, I mean, I know you must be a Christian too, right?” I handled that so well.

Her humble response, “Well, I try my best to love Him and follow Him.”

My words came out in a rush, “Please, stop trying to love Him and follow Him. rest. He wants you to let Him love up on you. Just rest in Him. He loves you.”

“Thank you so much. You are so sweet to me,” she said and gave me a hug.
(Later)
I was so pleased to run into Doris later. I wanted to know her name, and I told her that she had inspired me to write a post about her for my blog. I asked her permission to publish it.
Her answer was so sweet again. “Thank you so much. Yes. You are so nice to me. I have really been thinking about what you said.”
All I could think was, “I am so sweet to her? She is the one who is so sweet by honoring me and allowing me to share our special moment.”
Doris added something special to my Allume experience. She allowed me to live out the theme and focus of daring to show Christian love. She is such a loving and sweet woman. I am honored I was allowed to meet her and give her an encouraging word. I felt like the whole encounter was a divine appointment.

Wow. This was a divine appointment. How many people just pass her by without a nod? How many miss the gleam in her eye and how many more did Christ tell to tell her and they did not obey? In the obedience you were blessed.
