Poetry is about musical words, blending together to evoke emotion whether laughter, smiles, or feelings of love and wanting. Poetry can be a glimpse into the beautiful parts of life, being a father or mother to children who mean the whole world to you. Many of the classical poets and poems explored themes of family and love, From Robert Lowell’s “Home After Three Months Away” to Janice Mirikitani’s “For a Daughter Who Leaves,” these poems all touch a common chord. My all time favorite poem about a mother’s love for her daughter is Sylvia Plath’s Morning Song.
I have recently experimented with a poem dedicated to my own daughter, Katie Rose. I know it is not on the same par with the classics, but it means something to me. I hope you enjoy the sentiment at least. Whether you are planning one day to be a mother or you already have children, the love you will feel or feel is something universal. Parents love their children in ways unimaginable.
D is For Daughter
A daughter is a gift of love from above.
A daughter is laughs, wiggles and giggles.
She can bring aggravation but at the same elation,
With her tantrums and sweet flirty have my way attitudes.
She grows up much too quickly,
Time melts and the little girl with her giggles
Grows into a young lady with dainty smiles and beauty.
She becomes all about makeup and fixing her hair
Homework, best friends, and mommy, “I want a cell phone.”
The next thing you know she walking across a stage
Moving away from home off to her own life
College, career, and one day, maybe if God so smiles,
She will know what it is like to be a mother of a
Beautiful, baby daughter.
