Cynthia Ruchti’s Song of Silence With Themed Giveaway!

I remember my love and passion for my career; so, I really identified with the main character in Cynthia book.  Just as the main character, Lucy, loved working with her students and teaching the love of music,  I too loved working in my library with books, stories, and sharing the love of literature with them. When my disability and illness forced me to retire, I floundered too with finding new identity and a new path. Lucy too faced early retirement not because of illness, however, but budget cuts: something with which all educators can relate.

Although a novel and work of fiction, this story resonated with me. Mrs. Ruchti paints a realistic picture of what it is like when you are faced with events that floor you and make you question your purpose in life. Lucy loved music and built a successful music program at her private school. She loved instilling that love into the young people she taught. Her whole identity centered around teaching music.  I can really identify with her when her school board decided to cut her program because of budget cuts. Her purpose in life seemed so tied with her career.

Now that her purpose seems to have vanished, Lucy is left with the questions of : “What next? How do I redefine myself and find new purpose?” She has a loving husband who does his best to help her, but she is too caught up in her own emotional upheaval to fully appreciate his concern.

Lucy also soon learns that life involves more than just a career. Her grown children also face serious changes. Her daughter trying to start a new career by returning to graduate school, and her son finding the love of his life and announcing his pending marriage to take place in just two weeks. To add to the complexity both of her grown children want to move home temporarily. Her son wants to bring his instant family of mother and her son. His soon-to-be wife is deaf and his stepson works to overcome Aspergers.

How does a family blend and survive change? How does Lucy find her music again so that love will sing in her life?
