Day Four
By Mary Hill

A few months ago, we had rabbits because our mother and father bunnies were very prolific. We decided to find other families of all our rabbits. When it came time to pack them up and took them to the auction, our oldest daughter wanted to keep one of them for her daughter, our granddaughter. We kept a wired colored one. We loaded the rest up, but I wanted to keep the cream one. I had determined upon examination that both baby bunnies were boys. They were from different litters too; so, we would not have any surprises.
My little cream bunny was so sweet. I love that bunny so much. I could go in and it would come up to my shoes and chew on my laces and allow me to pick it up. I could snuggle it close and carry it around without it trying to get down or away. The other bunny was wild just like its color. I could never catch him.
Anyway, until yesterday, I thought they were both boys. When I looked out in their pen and saw fur everywhere, alarmed, I rushed outside to make sure nothing had gotten into the pen with my bunnies and parakeets. My cream bunny was snatching fur off of its belly and would take clumps of it down into a hole.
It doesn’t take a genius to know the end of this story. We had a couple and not two boys. I mistakenly thought my cream bunny was a boy, and she was a female.
My husband doesn’t believe me when I tell him I really thought the bunny was a male. I could have sworn it had the um male appendage. I mean it popped right out at me. My daughter thought both rabbits had “balls” too.
Tonight my husband shined a light down the hole and found it full of rabbit fur and little tiny babies squirming everywhere. He didn’t want to pick them up, but said, “Yep, we have babies.” My husband just shook his head. “I know you did this on purpose.”
“I swear I didn’t. I honestly thought she was a boy.”
Now, I am going to order the Easter backdrop to take bunny portraits. I can’t wait til they emerge from that hole. I know our grands are going to enjoy carrying around the tiny bunnies. The tiny bunnies are an early Spring surprise.
I am also joining these fun blog hops for Tuesday:

We have bunnies and LOVE them! They are so very sweet! -Marci @ Stone Cottage Adventures
LOL, oh, no!!! That reminds me of when one of our female cats started getting pregnant and having babies, we were so excited! Congratulations! : )
awwwwwwwww! how sweet! Congratulations!
This was such a happy tale (tail?) for those of us eager for Spring! You are not the first, or the last who will be surprised to discover they made a slight error in this regard. I’m smiling and thinking maybe God decided that you and your grandchildren needed a bit of furry love in this season. I’m sure you will find more good homes as the bunnies grow older, in the mean time enjoy them, and share some photos with us when they are big enough to make an appearance on their own! ๐
Uh oh! Well, at least you’ll have more of them. ๐
Such a sweet bunny story. At least your girl bunny gave you the gift of more bunnies.
What a nice surprise!
What a fun story. I hope you are not going to separate them now they are married!
What a delightful tale and such a warm ending.
OK, I have to ask, why does your husband think you did this on purpose? Have you make a similar mistake before? ๐ I agree that he should probably be in charge of double checking the sex from now on. It’s really, really hard to tell when the critters are so young. What a fun surprise though!
I guess I didn’t include the teasing he has directed toward me. He keeps making a joike of it. I think he is looking forward to the baby bunnies too. He did want to take a break from babies for a while because it is a lot of work keeping the pen up. It is really a good natured teasing though.
The bunny is so cute. My family raises rabbits too, and I think they’re adorable and very friendly. Your grandkids will have fun them with their pet.
I love them too. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your comment today. ๐
Aww, sweet bunnies! Funny bunny mistake…it will be so sweet to see the tiny babies!
So sweet. I wish I could see them. Thanks for including a picture. I like your vivid verbs “popped,” “snatching,” “Squirming.” Maybe your husband should take on the responsibility of determining the sex of the rabbits from now on ๐
I so agree. I will let my husband check the sexes from now on. It is hard to do when they are youing.
