Ah, middle school. It begins. My daughter walks into her middle school in less than 10 hours, a sixth grader. She accomplishes another milestone as she approaches another critical date in her life.
We remember those times as young women: wanting to fit in, needing so badly to fit in. Friends become so important.
The pressures our young people face today seems so much more than what we faced when we were youngsters. I can remember excitement about changing classes and more independence. I didn’t think about the responsibilities that go hand in hand with this time such as more school work and responsibilities to help around the house.
My daughter is so excited tonight; she can barely sleep. The only reason she wanted to go to middle school was her locker. She has looked forward to having a locker since kindergarten. It makes me chuckle as I think about how much she wanted to decorate it and how much planning she did. She will probably see it less than 15 minutes a day. The locker is a symbol of her independence and a stepping stone. She is growing up. She has to remember her locker combination. She has to be responsible for organizing it; making sure she has tools for learning in her classroom; keeping up with homework and so much more.

Oh Mary! What a beautiful post to share with us today! Yes, this is such a critical point in life, and so very exciting! Being your daughter, I know that you have taught her well, and she will choose the right ways as she encounters the road bumps on the journey. I love her locker décor! That wasn’t done way back when I went to school, or even when my kids did. A little self-expression makes it feel like home! I join you in prayers that her school experience will be safe and wonderful, and that she does well too!
