A Creative Hodgepodge of A’s

April 1, 2013 By Mary Hill 8 Comments

Today is the special kick off day for the April A to Z Blogging Challenge.  A also stands for Arlee Bird, who on April 1, 2010, issued a challenge to bloggers to blog from A to Z everyday except Sunday in April. That first year 100 participants joined him. This year more than 1,800 people have joined the challenge. Bloggers are also taking the day to honor Arlee for his vision in starting A to Z. Isn’t it really ironic that his pen name begins with A?

Today is also April Fools’ Day. Have you ever wondered how April Fools’ Day began? According to Infoplease the celebration may have began with the adoption of the new Gregorian Calendar to replace the old Julian Calendar. The new calendar moved the new year from April 1 to January 1. Many traditionalist in France either did not learn of the change or refused to follow the new calendar.  People began to try to trick the traditionalist by sending them on “fools” errands or playing jokes on them. This practice of tricking people continued each year thus April Fools’ Day was born.

Also this day begins Poetry Month.  April is a celebration of poetry.
My creative word for today is:  Assonance which is the repetition of vowel sounds but not consonant sounds as in consonance. In honor of today’s word, I have written a poem:

An April Wind of Spring
By Mary Hill

An April Wind
Dance and prances
Springs and sings
Through trees with its branches
Swaying to the breeze, swishing leaves.

Flowers begin to bloom with power
Colors of purple, blues and numerous pretty hues
Creating a carpet in which larks and robins play
Birds twirp and whirl through the day
Catching worms for their little birdlings tucked in nests

Spring brings ringing of new sounds and colors
As winter slides away in to yesterday.

Now it is your turn. Can you create a poetic line of assonance?

I love the poem, it sounds like a great challenge. If I wasn’t already involved in the activist one I would have enjoyed it. I look forward to reading the rest of yours!

I am really bad at assonance – I’ve tried for five minutes, and there are just too many vowel sounds in English for this to be easy! I like your devotion to creativity, though! I’m doing a collaborative story for the A to Z Challenge on my blog, if you want to read and contribute something delightfully creative to it! =)

Hopping over to you from the A to Z challenge. I’m out of creativity for today, so much for assonance. But it’s a nice poem.

Awesome tid-bit! I’ve studied the calendar change, but didn’t get deep enough to realize the beginning of the year had changed!

Great poem, and if I had more brain left, I would throw a poetic line back at you. Alas…

I’m all out of poetic creativity for one day but thanks for popping in to visit my blog. I might take up one of your challenges over the coming month.

I love this poem. You have such a bright voice. Arlee really did a wonderful thing when he created this A to Z challenge. This is my third year and I love it!
